JuneApril Way is a private practice created by Megan Simpson, a certified Instructor and Child Facilitator trained at the Autism Treatment Center of America™, home of The Son-Rise Program®. The Autism Treatment Center of America was the first to suggest that children and adults challenged with Autism, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Pervasive Developmental Disorder and other neurodevelopmental difficulties had the potential for extraordinary healing and growth. This comprehensive system of treatments and educational strategies is designed to help families enable their children to dramatically improve in all areas of learning and social development.
The home-based, child-centered program focuses on love and acceptance of all behaviors as the key to encouraging and embracing children and their life experiences. JuneApril Way utilizes these techniques as well as other methodologies to consistently develop and nurture a child's ability to thrive in a social environment. Barry Neil and Samahria Kaufman created The Son-Rise Program when their son Raun was diagnosed as severely and incurably autistic in the early 1970s. Advised by experts to institutionalize him because of his "hopeless, lifelong" condition, the Kaufman's instead created their own treatment of helping Raun. Their therapy focused on joining Raun in his activities instead of stopping and going against his ritualistic and autistic behaviors.
The Kaufman's unique program marked a complete departure from existing methods of treatment and transformed Raun from a mute, withdrawn child with an IQ of less than 30 into a highly verbal, socially interactive youngster with a near genius IQ. Today, Raun bears no traces of his former condition. He graduated from Brown University with a degree in biomedical ethics and currently serves as Chief Executive Officer of the Autism Treatment Center of America in Sheffield, MA.
